IBM Wild Duck Award (2024)
Inaugural award
The Wild Duck award recognizes individuals who not only demonstrate growth behaviors but also aren't afraid to try something new. They're proactive and don't wait for permission to drive outcomes.
The names are based on a philosophy that Thomas J. Watson adopted in 1958. He began to talk about wild ducks referencing a story that originated from the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, who wrote: "You can make wild ducks tame, but you can never make tame ducks wild again." In a speech at the annual Hundred Percent Club Watson said, "I prize every wild duck in the IBM Company", and that's where it all started.
In 1967, IBM ran a recruiting campaign in Japan with a double-spread magazine ad and the tagline read "It's great to work with wild ducks". The ad went on to describe that every company had people with un-conventional personalities and that we treasured those people because they brought unique qualities.

We are asked many times to try new ideas and work passionately in collaboration with each other. By choosing this naming, we can tie IBM's history to our goals today.
